New Cancer Drugs

Back in the early part of the 1990’s a film called ‘The Medicine Man’ was released and the story revolved around a doctor working in South America who discovers the cure for cancer, only to lose it in a local disaster. Think about that for a moment. Research over the years has helped our understanding of cancer but not to the point where we are able to foretell exactly when it will happen.

Of course many researchers belief that we are in effect born with cancer which is just waiting for something to set if off, but just what is cancer? They are able to spread to other areas of the body in a process called metastasis.

There are rare occasions when a benign tumor changes to a malignant one. Statistics show that cancer is responsible for around thirteen in every one hundred deaths each year. While smoking, chemicals and radiation for instance, can be the cancer trigger, it is the poison from these or other sources that transform body cells and create genetic abnormalities which grow and multiply.

Treatment Options for Drug Addiction and Alcoholism Addiction

You realise that you (or someone close to you) needs help for their addiction. What options then have you got when it comes to alcoholism addiction treatment and treatment for drug addiction?

I believe that rehab or a professional inpatient treatment program should always be your first choice - where you will spend typically 3-6 weeks in treatment getting clean and sober (length of stay can vary depending where you go)

The reason I think rehab should be your first choice - is because it not only helps you detox - but follows a focused in-patient treatment program that will help you deal with a lot of the ’stuff’ that causes you to use or drink.

And you’re just not going to get that same level of intensive treatment and care unless you go to an inpatient treatment program like Rehab. Plus a good rehab will begin preparing you in terms of what you need to do when you hopefully make a fresh start after having left treatment.

Many people have a perception that rehab is unaffordable and so is realistically never going to happen. There are a lot of treatment centers however, that have government backing, and so make it possible for just about anyone to go.

Facts Worth Learning About Cholesterol

There is both good and bad cholesterol which means that it is important to be able to differentiate between each type and know how it impacts a person’ s health and know the ways and means to lower it in case such is needed.

The different types of cholesterol are LDL and HDL and the preceding is a bad type because when there’s excess of it in a person’s blood it will build up in the inner walls of his or her arteries which can end up causing the blocking of the arteries and thus causes atherosclerosis that’s not a desirable condition.

HDL In High Quantities Will Prevent Heart Attacks

However, the good form of cholesterol is HDL, which when present in high quantities will actually help in preventing heart attacks, though when the level of HDL is low, it can put the person at risk of experiencing a heart attack.

There is another aspect to cholesterol and that is triglyceride, which is a type of fat that’s obtained from the food that you eat and which is also produced in the body, and when there is a high level of triglycerides, you are at risk of having high total cholesterol in which you can get high LDL as well as low HDL, which is bad for your health.

Drug Dependency Rehab options

Drug addiction rehab basically means quitting drugs and discovering how to live a drug-free life. However, this can be a very complex process.

Different drugs have different effects on the body and mind, and certain individuals are more predisposed to addiction to some chemical stimulants than others. Likewise there is no one-size-fits-all drug rehabilitation therapy that suits everybody.

Drug rehabilitation can take the form of behavioral (or ‘cognitive’) therapy, medication, or a combination of both. A number of factors determine which therapy will work best.

Behavioral therapy gives drug users alternatives for dealing with their drug cravings. It teaches them ways to avoid drugs and avoid setback. This type of therapy also teaches addicts how to manage a relapse should it occur. When a person’s drug-related behavior places him or her at higher risk for AIDS or other infectious diseases, behavioral treatments can help to reduce the risk of infection transmission. Case management and referral to alternative medical, psychological, and community services are vital components of therapy for many patients.
